Great Britain U20 Men stand firm for a winning start in Chalkida
Some nice defence locked out Albania as Great Britain stood firm to get off to the perfect start with a 62-44 triumph on the opening day of the FIBA U20 European Championship Division B 2016.
GB took to the floor in Chalkida for the first time and after a tentative opening few minutes, began to show the value of their intensive hard work during preparation as they controlled their opponents' for long periods.
Once Andreas Kapoulas' side had manoeuvred their way into a 17-11 first quarter advantage, they would not relinquish their superiority and by half-time had extended their lead to double-digits at 34-23.
Most impressive was the balanced nature of the offence alongside the hard-nosed defence, with seven different scorers on the stat sheet by the time GB hit the locker rooms.
With captain Jules Dang Akodo leading by example and University of Duquesne competitor Josh Steel particularly impressive, GB carried their good work into the third and fourth quarters.
They subsequently stifled any hopes of an Albanian rescue mission and comfortably eased over the finishing line to seal a first day success. Steel stood out with 10 points and eight rebounds, while Pharroh Gordon top scored with 12 points.
Great Britain's next game will take place at 12.15 tomorrow against Ireland.
