It's been a high-scoring few days for three British stars currently playing in the NCAA. In this regular piece, we review their results in addition to others that have feature on GB rosters.
GB's Will Neighbour sets new records for UALR
Surrey centre Will Neighbour has helped his University of Arkansas-Little Rock (UALR) team to in the Sun Belt Conference to two more victories. First on Thursday night, the 6'10 senior notched up 1,000 career points for the Trojans with 24 points and 12 rebounds in the 80-69 win over against Louisiana. Neighbour now joins five other Trojans in reaching the career landmark of 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
Then, UALR came from behind on Sunday to beat South Alabama 62-58 with Neighbour producing game-high performances in scoring and rebounding (23 points from 75% shooting, 9 rebounds in addition to 3 blocks). UALR have a 7-3 Sun Belt Conference record and face Conference leaders Georgia State on Thursday night in Little Rock.
England U18 captain Luke Nelson produced a career-high 26 points last Thursday night but it wasn't enough to stop University of California - Irvine going down to their second successive defeat, when they lost at UC Santa Barbara (60-80).
The freshman guard had another excellent scoring performance with 15 points in Saturday's 64-50 road win at California Polytechnic State University. He also added 5 rebounds and 4 assists, as UC-Irvine take a share of the lead in the Big West Conference with UC-Santa Barbara and Long Beach State, who travel to UC-Irvine on Thursday night.
Great Britain's Ovie Soko also had a convincing performance for Duquesne last Thursday night that saw the 6'8 forward score a game-high 25 points with 8 rebounds in a 71-64 non-conference win at New Jersey Institute of Technology.
And it was a similar story for Soko on Saturday night with 23 points and 8 rebounds for the Londoner at La Salle. But the major difference was the result (63-71 loss), which leaves Duquesne with a 2-5 Atlantic 10 record so far.
Ali Fraser's Gotha Rockets went down to a Saturday night defeat in the German A-League against Giessen 46ers (70-84), who were without their injured Great Britain international Myles Hesson. Fraser scored 8 points and won 3 rebounds, but Gotha's record for the season slips to 10-10. Giessen who complete a double of wins over Gotha, remain 4th with a 13-7 record.
Great Britain veteran Pops Mensah-Bonsu was involved as Galatasaray claimed their first two Euroleague Top 16 victories. They beat Bayern Munich 72-66 on Saturday January 25th, with Mensah-Bonsu contributing a modest 3 points and 4 rebounds against the German club. On Friday, the British power forward scored 8 points with 4 rebounds as the Turks beat Lithuanians Zalgiris Kaunas 90-83.
Mensah-Bonsu's form in the Turkish TBL league has also been good ahead of tonight's game with Besiktas. Pops produced a double-double (14 points and 15 rebounds) in the TBL defeat to Anadolu Efes Istanbul (67-78) on Monday January 27th.
A remarkable double-double from Laurence Ekperigin came close to landing Poitiers an upset victory over ProB promotion challengers Evreux in France. Poitiers went down 81-74 on the road but the British power forward did his part with a season-high 29 points from 71% shooting, as well as 12 rebounds but his side remain in 10th position.
Also, in France, Matt Bryan-Amaning scored 14 points with 6 rebounds against Nanterre, but it wasn't enough to force the win (77-80) and Antibes remains second from bottom in the ProA table.
2013 GB squad member Ashley Hamilton enjoyed a second successive DNA Silver double-double for Italian club Calabria on Sunday night. Despite the 6'7 forward adding 17 points and 11 rebounds, the Calabria side lost to their higher-ranked opponents Casalpusterlengo 67-76.
In the UK, Newcastle Eagles won the battle of the BBL's big two with a Friday win over Leicester Riders (84-82) with Leicester's 2013 Great Britain squad member Jamell Anderson adding 8 points to the final tally. Meanwhile on the same night, Sheffield Sharks' GB U20 guard Nick Lewis made his contribution in the victory over London Lions (96-93) with 8 points and 5 rebounds. Sunday saw Cheshire Phoenix triumph at Glasgow Rocks (97-74), with Rocks' 2013 GB international Gareth Murray to the fore in a losing cause (8 points and 7 rebounds).
