British Basketball announces the under-20 Great Britain team to play in Men's Division-A FIBA Europe Championship.
British Basketball has announced the final twelve players that will compete in the Division-A FIBA Europe Championships commencing tomorrow Tuesday, 8 July in Greece (Heraklion, Crete).
The final selection was made after a short preparation phase at the University of Essex. Three players of last year's team return as GB look to make an impact at the Division-A level for the first time. Scotland's Grant Mackay returns along with England's Rowell Graham (captain) and Jordan Spencer. Elliot Sentance also gains selection after unfortunately missing last year's championship campaign because of injury sustained during the preparation phase.
Senior squad selection Luke Nelson joins fellow England under-18 Division-A graduates Ben Lawson, Tamas Okros and Kavell Bigby-Williams to add to the experience of the group. These three were part of the 2013 England under-18 team that finished ninth overall in their European Championship.
Other new GB debutants are Conor Murtagh and Alex Young. Joe Junior Mvuezolo and Luke Mascall-Wright have been late call ups because of injuries. Lucas Stivrins unfortunately misses out as the naturalised spot goes to Alex Young.
Head coach Douglas Leichner commented;
"We have selected a talented group of individuals for our final team roster. The team comprises a nice mixture of experienced Division-A level players, coupled with returning under-20 members and the enthusiasm of players competing for their country for the first time.
"This is a great opportunity to show our resolve and fortitude from a challenging preparation phase. We are excited about competing against elite teams at the Division-A European Championships."
With an eye on the future the team features five players eligible again in 2015.
National Teams Director Warwick Cann commented;
"Unfortunately the preparation has been short and disrupted with injuries and player availability. However I am pleased that the staff and players are focused on the task of competing well at Division-A level.
"I am also extremely grateful to all the staff who have worked together at late notice and in a short time to have the team prepared and in good spirits for our challenge."
