Pops Mensah-Bonsu led GB for the second straight night, finishing with an impressive 25 point, 15 rebound double-double, and he was again given good support from Ogo Adegboye (19 points) and Dan Clark (18 points).
Despite the loss, Britain's third four point defeat of the summer, head coach Chris Finch remained positive:
"It was an encouraging performance, and we gave ourselves a chance to win the game. It was good for us to play in front of a high-energy crowd, because we'll have to face that kind of pressure when we're on the road in the European qualifiers. Their three-point shooting really hurt us, especially in the second half. But when we played physically we were pretty effective."
GB face the Netherlands in the final day of the four-team tournament, and a victory against the winless Dutch will give them second place in the competition. However Finch is taking nothing for granted: "They've lost both games pretty heavily, but they're a decent team and those results aren't indicative of how good they are."
Watched by the England under-18 team who are playing in the European Championship in Tel Aviv, GB started slowly, and trailed 24-17 at the first break before Israel edged further ahead to lead 34-26 going into the final four minutes of the half. However, the visitors fought back and Adegboye sunk a pair from the foul line to make it a four point game before a long two-pointer from Dan Clark meant that GB only trailed 38-35 going into the locker room at half-time.
That good run continued into the second half and with 4:08 on the clock GB were level at 54 before Justin Robinson drove to the basket to put them 56-54 ahead going into the last four minutes of the third period. The game continued to be tight, and the teams went into the final break level at 63, but it was Israel who took control in the opening four minutes as they built a 72-67 lead with 5:45 remaining.
Mensah-Bonsu hit a pair from the line to keep GB in the game, but Israel went into the final ninety seconds 85-77 ahead after converting one from two at the charity stripe.Robinson stepped up to drill a trey inside the last minute to make it three-point game, but that was as close as GB got with the hosts sealing it at the line.
