The sister of NBA superstar, and Great Britain men’s international Luol, Deng is a 6’3” centre who made her national team debut in the 2007 Eurobasket campaign which saw the women clinch promotion to the A Division.

Along with her eight brothers and sisters, Deng fled the Sudanese Civil War, eventually moving to London where she discovered the sport at the famous Brixton youth programme. Her talent was immediately obvious and, after spending a spell at American high school at Blair Academy in New Jersey, she received a basketball scholarship from the University of Maryland.

Deng’s freshman year was plagued by injury, however, and convinced her to try her luck at another college, the University of Delaware, a move which forced her to sit out the 2002-03 season as per NCAA regulations. The next three seasons, Deng was finally able to get her collegiate career underway with the Blue Hens.

The 2006-07 season saw Deng turn professional in France, with second division club Pleyber Christ Basket, and, a year later, she was back in England, making her EBL debut for the Solent Suns. The 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns had Deng again playing for the Suns, although this time for the Sevenoaks Suns in the EBL.

Like her brother, Deng had played for the England national team at junior age groups and, although injuries have limited her opportunities with the GB senior team, Deng showed glimpses in the 2007 international season to suggest she may yet have something to offer in the build-up to 2012.

Damian Jennings says: “Another player whose time with our programme has, sadly, been affected by injuries. Arek is big, a real physical presence, whose real strength offensively comes when she is around the ring. Defensively, she gives us a presence and size that commands space and creates issues for opponents around the key.”
