Sporting talent ran in Luckhurst’s family so it should have come as no surprise that the American-born guard has enjoyed success in top-level basketball.

Luckhurst’s English-born father Mick was a kicker with the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL while her mother Terri Hancock was a professional golfer on the LPGA tour. Consequently born and raised in Georgia, where her father settled after his NFL career was over, Nikki was an outstanding high school basketball player before winning a scholarship to play at Tulane, starting in the 2004-05 season.

A 5’8” guard, Luckhurst enjoyed a memorable college career, in which she helped Tulane win their Conference Championship in her junior year and also appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the Green Wave.

Through her father, she also came to the attention of the GB programme, which called her up for the 2008 campaign, the first in the A Division of Eurobasket, and Luckhurst saw limited minutes in games against Israel, Lithuania and the Ukraine.

However, she gained more valuable experience in the summer of 2009 when she was called up to the GB team that played in the World University Games in Belgrade, seeing time as a back-up guard as they went on to finish a creditable sixth. As the 2009-10 season got underway in Europe, however, Luckhurst was without a club and living in the US.

Damian Jennings says: “Nikki is not the biggest player on the court but she makes up for that with her feisty character, her incredible quickness and her consistent three-point shooting. She is one of those players who can come off the bench and make an instant impact on a game. In many ways, she reminds me of an American Football field goal kicker, a specialist who comes off the bench to make an important contribution – which, of course, is what her father’s job used to be. She is also a great character to have around.”
